Seakayak trips in Lofoten

Lofoten Kajakk offers seakayaktrips with guide all year through. Courses approved by BCU and NPF.

You can spend the day paddling and exploring the Raftsundet Alps with the deep and narrow mysterious fjord beneath these towering and glittering snow-covered peaks, or seek the open ocean within the cover of smaller islands; a perfect venue for watching birds, sea mammals and complex environment ocean currents create around these islands on the North Atlantic coast.

A last option is the many small islands in the "Inner side" of Lofoten with the same abundance of natural activity and view of Norway’s mainland.

Tailor made trips are available all year round - with a guide. Instructions and training are provided, and security is given the upmost priority.

Lofoten Kajakk in Kabelvåg offers guided seakayak trips. We are a "Certified Norwegian EcoTourism" company, the first in Northern Norway.

Seakayak courses, approved by NPF and BCU are also offered. Our rental service has sea- and surf kayaks throughout the year. Spraydeck, paddle and PFD are included.

We run our trips at 10 a.m. from the Tourist information centre at the town square in Svolvær.

The Blacksmith of Sund

There is something reminiscent of a fairy tale about the story of one of Lofoten's oldest tourist attractions. Operations at the museum and the smithy have been kept as is since the two were established by Hans Gjertsen in 1947. The official opening of the museum took place in 1964, but the groundwork was laid in 1963 with the opening of the E10 road (King Olav V's Way). As one of the pioneers of tourism in Lofoten, the blacksmith Hans Gjertsen carried out the marketing stunt of a lifetime during the opening ceremony. He literally forced his way through the crowd to King Olav V, in order to present him with his work of art, the Cormorant. Hans had asked for permission in advance, but had been refused by the organisers. The King, on the other hand, was clearly rather curious about the voice that rang out above the crowd, uttering the words: "Excuse me King! Can I give you a cormorant?" The rest is history.

Today, Tor-Vegard Mørkved is the Blacksmith of Sund. In the summer of 1987 he was taken in on trial as Hans Gjertsen's protégé. Hans soon realised that Tor-Vegard had the necessary guts and aptitude for the blacksmith trade, and as early as autumn 1987, he offered him an apprenticeship with the prospect of taking over the business at a later date. Hans was then 70 years old and had 40 years of experience behind him as the blacksmith of Sund. In June 1989, Tor-Vegard took over the running of the smithy and later the same year he passed his blacksmith's exams. Tor-Vegard and Hans worked together for several years; Hans Gjertsen was active almost right up until he passed away in 2006. This close collaboration led to a seamless transition in the artistic and storytelling traditions at the smithy, with Tor-Vegard turning the continued operation of the smithy and museum into his lifework and calling.
The history of the museum is one of diversity. The keynote is the entertainment factor: conveyed by relating local history, often spiced up with a humorous fib or tall tale. Hans Gjertsen appreciated the value of showmanship and monkey business, a fact which often involved him exercising poetic license when talking about certain exhibits. If a story was lacking in some way, or potentially downright boring, the next time you paid a visit you might hear it delivered with a completely different twist. We seek to carry on this tradition as best we can. Our aim is to be a unique attraction, offering unique experiences.
The museum has been through a number of different phases, but over the past few years something has become perfectly clear to us: the venue should be seen as an installation - undergoing a process of constant development. The setting is the same, but new features and adaptations will turn up from time to time. We have a large collection of Norwegian boat motors, together with some from Sweden, Denmark, Finland, England and the USA. These motors are from the period c. 1901-1970, and the oldest operable one dates back to 1908. In addition to this, we have a collection of old fisheries exhibits together with some boats and a range of household articles. Most of the museum employees are locals, a fact which helps underscore the feeling of authenticity. There is a café at the museum run by an independent company. It is well visited by the locals, thus allowing visitors to meet them in an open environment.
Everyone in Lofoten thinks their home town is the most beautiful and we are no exception. The sound of old boat engines and the blacksmith's rhythmic hammering are the heartbeat of Lofoten!

Seasafari in Vestvågøy

Are you interested in untouched nature, coastal culture or animal and bird life? Join us for an exciting Wildlife Sea Safari - a unique combination of the sea and history!

Our tour is a great opportunity to experience one of the biggest active fishing villages – Ballstad, where cod liver oil is still produced. You will find here also many traditional fishermen’s cottages standing on stilts as well as the largest mural in Northern Europe on the boatyard walls. Following the inner coast we visit Nusfjord, which in 1975 become one of three pilot projects aimed at conserving Norway's building heritage.

On our way to the outer coast you will be told stories about the Storbatshallaren cave – the oldest settelment from the Stone Age found in Lofoten and Vesteralen. Further, passing the Nappstraumen, you are invited to encounter sea eagles. Our jorney will return in Houkland - a 2 km long beach which has the shape of a half moon. White sand, shimmering turquoise water and a black frame of surrounding cliffs make an unforgettable view that concludes this unique excursion.

All participants are provided with warm, waterproof survival suits but we recommend also to bring gloves and a cap. Please do not forget to wear comfortable shoes.

Fishing trip in Flakstad - MK Børfjell

Experience real Lofoten fishing together with a genuine fisherman. You will come aboard his boat and will do your own fishing with a fishing rod or a fishing reel.

Chances of a catch are good in Lofoten as this is a very rich fishing area. The fisherman, Mr. Jim-Inge Pedersen has been active as a fisher since 1994 and he knows the waters around Lofoten as his own back pocket. This means that he most often will find a place where catches are good. His vessel, “MK Børfjell” has a safe deck, sufficient fishing equipment and certified safety equipment for crew and passengers.

Capacity for each trip is 6 guests.

”MK Børfjell” operates with daily departures from Sund in Lofoten at 10:00 am from June 1st through July 31st. Reservation is necessary.

Price:
1 - 4 person NOK 3200,-
5 - 6 person NOK 4800,-
The trip lasts around 3 hours.

Mr. Jim Inge Pedersen is glad to accommodate other bloat trips or arrangements upon specific request. Searching for sea eagle or experiencing the midnight sun from a boat deck are examples of such arrangements.

Make sure to wear sturdy footwear and warm clothes, regardless of season or general temperature. Being on the ocean is always colder than being on shore.

Onboard the vessel you will find different kind of fishing equipment. “MK Børfjell” is fully rigged to operate fishing with nets or longline angles during Lofoten seasonal cod fisheries in the winter. For tourist season the deck is cleared for safety purposes. If arrangements are made in advance, you can experience hauling of a set of longline in the traditional style. This will allow for a fantastic photo-opportunity. In such cases the longline needs to be prepared one day in advance of the actual fishing trip.

Mr. Jim Inge Pedersen offers coffee and tea onboard, and is happy to treat all guests to real life stories about his life as a fisherman, about catches, equipment or about being a local citizen of a fishing village in Lofoten.

Book your trip on lofoten.info, call Mr Pedersen on 0047 91313 897 or send him a booking request on email to this address; jim-i-pe@online.no.

Tyskhella is an old building dating back to about 1905, and built by Johan Tysk. Originally, and up until 1993, the building was used as a fisherman’s cabin and tackle shed.
In 1996 the site was taken over by new owners and restored, upgraded and converted into a commercial overnight accommodation business in compliance with today’s demands on facilities and standard.

Tyskhella has an excellent agreement with Kabelvåg Hotel with regard to the serving of food and drink to our guests. The hotel is only 30 metres from Tyskhella.

The resort includes 12 rorbu cabin style apartments in three different sizes. Each is of good standard and adapted to suit wheelchair users. All of our rorbu cabin apartments have separate entrances, kitchens and bathrooms.

Lofoten is a mecca for cyclists! From your bike, you can discover local gems and become acquainted with Lofoten’s culture and history together with our knowledgeable guides. Our goal is for you to cycle safely and experience the combination of a bike ride together with a taste of our culture and history. We have devised the route from Svolvær to Kabelvåg, before we enter a secret beach at Ørsnes, which is something of a find. We adjust the route to the weather. We wish to show you Lofoten in our own way, how we live here, and you will get a taste of local history from our guides.

We invite you to our offices in Svolvær harbour where you will be welcomed by our tour guide and host for the trip. The bikes are sized from XS to XL and will be adjusted to fit you. And not even at the cost of a lot of climbing effort. The route goes by the sea, and is thus manageable for most people. You do not need to be particularly fit to join this ride, which totals about 30 km.

The trip takes about five hours. Weather in Lofoten changes rapidly, from sunshine and clear skies to rain. Make sure to bring an extra top, and a pair of gloves if your ride is in May or August, when temperatures can drop some.

Main season: 15 May to 31 August
The cycle ride takes place Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays in the main season.

World-class Golf

Lofoten Links is a spectacular 18-hole championship seaside links course which is beautifully situated in the terrain. The idyllic location by the ocean with an unobstructed view to the north and the midnight sun makes it a grand experience.

The ocean is a water hazard on several holes and sandy beaches act as natural bunkers. At Lofoten Links, the sun can be your companion round the clock in the summer. This is the only 18-hole course in the world to offer this for more than two months. The season runs from May 1 through to the end of October. In the fall it is possibly at its most beautiful (and challenging) and instead of the midnight sun you may be able to experience the magical northern lights in the evenings after your round.

18 holes from July 1st, 2015

The course was opened in 1998 with 9 holes and has been expanded to 18 holes in recent years. As the only course in Scandinavia, Lofoten Links is part of Troon Golf. This is the world's largest management company for the operation of golf courses, and includes some of the world's most famous courses that are frequently being used by both the European- and the PGA Tour.

Facts:

Season: End of April – Middle of October.

Seaside link course, par 71 (18 holes) - 4 tees from Tee 61 (approximately 6100 m), 55, 48 & 42.

Golf all night long: End of May to late July.

Northern Lights golf: late August till the end of the golf season (mid. October, weather pending).

Clubhouse with accommodation, café, pro shop, trolley- and club hire.

Reinebringen

Photo: Kristin Folsland Olsen - visitnorway.com

Tour description

As always, hiking in Lofoten is at your own risk, so make sure you follow the path and watch out. Even if the path towards the top follows the Sherpa steps, it is very steep and parts of it can be demanding. You follow the stairs built into the steep mountain side and if you need a break, there are several nice spots with benches built along the path, allowing you a rest before the last few metres. The hike is not recommended for young children and for safety reasons, this hike is strictly not recommended in the winter season.

Reinebringen is far from one of the highest mountains in Lofoten, but the view from the top of Reinebringen is known for being one of the most spectacular ones. It is a favourite among many hikers and you will soon understand why when you reach the top. Sit down and enjoy the great view over the picturesque Reine village and the wild fjords and mountains. We also recommend the hike during the midnight sun season in Lofoten, as it is maybe even more beautiful at that time. And not least, there may be less people. The hike is extremely popular among locals and tourists alike.

It is very important to wear sturdy shoes, take plenty of water to drink and a wind proof jacket. An extra set of dry clothes is also recommended. And do not forget a fully charged camera battery, so you can bring your memories with you back home. But do not forget to enjoy the moment!

It could be that the mountain is closed during parts of the summer in order to complete the work on the steps. It is therefore a good idea to visit the Reinebringen Facebook page for updated information, or visit the local tourist information. As of January 2020, the mountain path had 1566 steps and several benches along the beautifully built Sherpa steps. You can read more about Reine and surrounding areas on Wikipedia.

Parking

If you decide to travel to see Reinebringen and arrive by car – you find parking at Reine Ytre Havn (outer harbour). This is where the hike starts. You first walk through the centre of beautiful Reine towards Reinehalsen (viewpoint by the main road) and then walk further along the E10 direction Å. Follow the old road outside of the tunnel. You find this at the left side of the road, outside the road fence. If you arrive by bus, the nearest bus stop is «Reine kryss» (Moskenes).

More useful advice

  • If you require an experienced tour guide to accompany you on a hike, you may book hikes in many beautiful Lofoten mountains here.
  • Take care of Lofoten when you visit – read more about how to be a responsible guest

Frequently asked questions:

Where is Reinebringen located?

Reinebringen is located in Moskenes island just close to the fishing village Reine.

Is it correct that Reinebringen may be closed at times?

Reinebringen has been closed at times due to work on the steps up the mountain. Please visit the Reinebringen Facebook page for updated and correct information about the Reinebringen path.

Can I do the hike if I am scared of heights?

Some parts of the hike can be very steep and «airy», and even if most of the path is built on steps, the hike is considered to be of medium difficulty.

When will the remaining steps be finished?

Reinebringen will be closed when the remaining steps are being built, but this will be done during the autumn 2021. We recommend that you visit the Reinebringen Facebook page for updates.

Is the hike suitable for children?

Locals and mountain guides do not recommend the hike for small children. It is possible to go on the top for children who are used to go hiking in steep mountains, but the top has a small area and on sunny days it will be crowded.

Are there accommodation close to Reinebringen?

Yes, you can find accommodation close by in Reine, Hamnøy or Sørvågen.

Kvalvika and Ryten (543 m)

Kvalvika and Ryten in Lofotenodden national park are some of the most popular hiking areas in Lofoten. And there is a good reason for that. The view from the top of Ryten far down to the long golden beach is second to none.

Information about Kvalvika/Ryten

Starting point: At Fredvang school.

Season: Spring, summer and autumn. In the winter on skis or with snow shoes.

Distance: 3.5 km directly to the top, 3 km directly to the beach.

Altitude: 543 metres above sea level.

Difficulty: Easy.

Duration: 1.5 hours (one way) to the beach. 2 hours (one way) to Ryten.

The hike to Kvalvika and Ryten attracts many people. This is where you experience the typical nature in Lofoten with steep mountains cliffs, emerald green sea and an impressive sandy beach, where it is tempting to go for a swim in the waves.

This hike is relatively easy and suitable for families who enjoy hiking in the mountains. There are several alternative routes, so you can decide if you prefer the long or the short version.

Kvalvika is on the island Moskenesøy, but it belongs to the municipality of Flakstad. This area is known for its beautiful sandy beaches. In addition to Kvalvika, we also recommend the beaches at Yttersand, Ramberg and Skagsanden, which are worth a visit if you enjoy walking barefoot on the white coral sand.

The nearest shopping centre in this area is in Ramberg, which is 7 km from Indresand, where you start the hike. Ramberg has a petrol station, shops, tourist information, restaurants, cafes and accommodation. There are also a variety of water sport activities for children and grown-ups.

You find more information about Kvalvika and the surrounding area on Wikipedia.

Parking at the school

Many people enjoy going to Kvalvika. We recommend that you park at Fredvang school and start your hike from there. There is a sign pointing to this parking once you have crossed the Fredvang bridges.

You can also find charging points for electrical cars at the school parking (summer 2021), as well as clean drinking water and rubbish bins.

Easy terrain

From the parking, follow the sign to the path towards Einangen. This is a good path that goes through an easy terrain with small crags and hills. The path goes to the north of the lake Einangsvannet and south of the hill 290. Remember not to disturb the sheep and keep your dog on a leash.

Continue further up until you see the lake Forsvatnet further down on your left hand side. This is where the path splits in two directions, so you need to decide if you want to continue up to the top of the mountain or go directly down to the beach.

If you decide to go to the top of Ryten first, you just follow the path up the hill. The path divides into different routes. If you follow the path that goes along the edge on the left, you get the most spectacular view. But the cliffs are very steep, so please be careful!

Magnificent views

Kvalvika - Sissel Hansen, Destination Lofoten

The view down to Kvalvika beach is impressive. Steep cliffs rise up on each side of the bay and create a beautiful frame around the beach.

When you approach the top of Ryten, the terrain becomes flatter. From the cairn at the top you get a great view over the open sea towards the north. What about doing this hike to see the midnight sun?

After having hiked to the top, many people like to go down to the beach. Maybe for a refreshing swim? Follow the path back down to the lake Forsvatnet and then follow the path from there down the hill towards the beach.

Round trip alternatives

You can make a round trip if somebody can drop you off and pick you up somewhere else along the route. The shortest route is from Kvalvika, over Skoren and down to Torsfjorden. The return trip can be cut shorter by going down to Torsfjorden on the eastern side of the lake Markvannet.

  • Take care of Lofoten when you visit – read more about how to be a responsible guest here.
  • You find more information about Lofotodden national park here.

Frequently asked questions:

Is this hike suitable for families?

Yes, the hikes down to Kvalvika and up to Ryten are both suitable for families. The path is good and not very demanding, even for young children. You may need to estimate double time if you bring small children. And you need to decide if you prefer alternative hikes that could be more enjoyable for the children.

Can you use a drone in the Kvalvika and Ryten area?

No, Kvalvika and Ryten are in the Lofotodden national park. In order to protect animal life and outdoor life, un-necessary noise must be avoided and the use of drones are not permitted in the Lofotodden national park.

Can you bring a dog to Kvalvika and Ryten?

Yes, but you need to keep your dog on a leash from the 1st of April to the 15th of November. Flakstad municipality has extended restrictions for dogs in order to protect grazing animals in the area. The path is suitable for dogs, but you may need to carry your dog over certain parts on the way down to Kvalvika.

Fløya and Djevelporten (590 m)

Fløya is a proud mountain, towering over Svolvær in Lofoten with the famous and characteristic Svolværgeita in front.

On the hike up to this mountain you will pass Djevelporten («The Devil’s Gate”), which is a large rock stuck in a gorge. There are also Sherpa stairs, called Djeveltrappa («The Devil’s Stairs») - an attraction in itself.

Sherpatrappa Fløya

Photo: Sherpa stairs leading up to Djevelporten and Fløya - Sissel Hansen

Fløya is Svolvær’s local mountain, and it has become even more popular with the Sherpa stairs going almost all the way up the mountain side. If you walk up to Fløya, you get a fantastic view over the city. Svolvær has 4700 inhabitants, and this is the area with the biggest population in the archipelago. Svolvær has a small airport and it is the port of call for both Hurtigruten, ferries and the express boat. In this small, big city you find a large selection of restaurants, galleries, shops and accommodation. The tourist information is at the central square, and they have plenty of tips about everything that Lofoten has to offer. What about kayaking in the harbour of Svolvær or a boat trip to the Trollfjord? You find more information about Svolvær on Wikipedia.

Information about Djevelporten and Fløya

Starting point: The parking in the city centre or the parking by the start of the stairs in Blåtindveien.

Season: Spring, summer and autumn.

Distance: 1.5 km (one way).

Altitude: 590 metres above sea level.

Duration: 2 hours (one way).

Difficulty: Easy up the stairs, medium towards Djevelporten. Demanding if you go all the way up to the cairn at the top.

Djevelporten

Photo: Djevelporten - CH - Visitnorway.com

Parking

The hike starts right outside the centre of Svolvær. There is a parking area to the northwest of the church yard, just where the Blåtindveien makes a narrow curve. But this parking fills up quickly and it may be easier to park in the city centre.

Tour description

The path leads you from the parking and up the hill.

After a short walk you come to the Sherpa stairs – or «Djeveltrappa» – as it is called by the locals. The work on the stairs started in 2019 and will be continued.

These stairs make it easier to reach a higher altitude, as long as your thigh muscles allow it. Luckily, there are several nice benches along the way, where you can relax and enjoy the view.

Chose the right path

When you come to the part where the terrain flattens out, the path splits in two directions. One direction goes to the right towards Svolværgeita, which is where you go to climb the famous mountain. If this is what you would like to do, you can find out about available mountains guides from the tourist information.

If you are going to Fløya you follow the path that goes straight ahead. After a while the path turns eastwards and then it goes through a wide valley, which ends in a gorge between the Frosken and Fløya mountains. There is a footbridge across the marsh. The terrain upwards is quite steep and craggy.

Steep and exposed

When you reach the top of the gorge you see the Djevelporten directly in front of you. This is the large rock stuck between the two mountain sides. This is a very steep and exposed area and it is very risky to go out onto the Djevelporten. Please be very careful if you decide to do this.

The path towards Fløya continues upwards in an arc shape along the mountain side. The path is good, but it goes through exposed terrain on the very edge of a cliff. When you arrive at the top you will have a magnificent view of the Vestfjord and Svolvær under your feet! On top of this mountain you will have plenty of space to enjoy a break. It is not possible to go down from the mountain in front of Svolværgeita – with a view towards the city. Follow the same path down or a path marked Lofoten High5 in blue and white.

If you want to reach the very highest point, you need your hands and feet to climb up a steep and challenging 2–3 metre long passage. After that, you can walk the last few metres to the top, which is marked with a cairn.

Please be aware that the steep passage can be even more demanding when you are going back down, especially in wet weather!

Tour description

This walk makes it easy to reach a high viewpoint without having to climb to a high altitude. Not everybody is inclined to climb steep hills or go for long hikes, so Linken is the perfect walk if you want easy access to a high viewpoint.

This walk is nice all year. But if you walk here in the wintertime, please remember to check the weather forecast before you go, as it may be slippery with ice and snow.

Linken/Tjeldbergaksla are a small distance from the centre of Svolvær, but still easy to get to. Linken is a small hilltop on the way up to Tjelbergtinden.

If you arrive by car, you can park in the city centre and walk to the fire station. It takes ca 20 minutes to walk from the centre of Svolvær to the starting point for the walk.

If you walk from the city centre, follow the cycle road towards Kabelvåg and exit the main road by the Esso petrol station. From Esso, you follow the road until you come to the fire station on your left hand side. Take a left just before the fire station and follow the road until you come to a sign pointing to "Tjeldbergtind". From here you follow the gravelled road all the way up to the top of Linken.

The road up the hill is very nice and surrounded by trees. On the way up, you will see the city of Svolvær and the beautiful mountains Løva and Kongstindan. When you come to the mast, you follow the small path behind the mast and then walk ca 150 metres to the viewpoint on the southern end.

If you would like a longer and steeper walk, you can follow the sign for Tjelbergtinden. This route goes further up to 367 metres above sea level.

Kaffepause - coffee break with the locals

Blend in with the locals over a cup of coffee.

Based on Norwegians' unique relationship with coffee - we actually drink second most in the whole world - you can book a meeting with a local in Lofoten on the website www.kaffepause.org. If you want to become better acquainted with local customs, traditions, stories, myths - and the daily life north of the Arctic Circle - this is for you.

Some visitors say it can be difficult to get to know us Norwegians - we have a reputation for being a little shy and introverted. We do not want to change this with Kaffepause: We are who we are and that is good enough. What we want to do is open the door ajar and give Norwegians and visitors an opportunity to meet each other and share the joy of a cup of coffee. Everyone who have tried the service describes it as a wonderful experience. Take a chance and sign up as a coffee guest! You won't regret it.

Viking Experience

Meet the Vikings. Smell the tar, taste the food, feel the history. The Vikings have been awaiting you for more than 1000 years. Experience the Viking age, going direct from the pier.

A short drive through rich, rolling farmland brings you to the Lofotr Viking Museum. Built around the discovery of the largest Viking longhouse ever found, the centerpiece is a reconstruction of that longhouse. Oil lamps flicker, smoke curls up from the fireplace, statues of the old gods stand among intricate wood carvings and walls hung with furs. Craftspeople weave, work leather and carve.

It's only the flash of cameras that remind you you're still in the present. And because the objects in the longhouse are replicas, you can get a little bit closer to the past by donning a helmet, picking up a sword, and playing Viking to your heart’s content!

The museum's other building houses the archaeological finds from the site, as well as an exhibition on the site's discovery, the souvenir shop, and a café.

One of Lofotens most famous museums

Practical Information
When: From 10.30
Price: 490 NOK pr.person
Activity level: Steps on and off the bus, 80 meter (87 yard) walk uphill between reception area and longhouse, 80 meter walk down to parking area.

It is recommended to use 1-1.5 hours at the Museum to have time enough for the different sections: Movie, Exhibition, Longhouse and souvenir-shop.

Bring the receipt for purchasing tour online and you can go directly to the bus. This receipt needs to be shown at the bus and at the Viking museum for free entrance.

Boat rental in Ballstad - Hemmingodden Lofoten Fishing Lodge

Lofotfisket lasts from February to April, and Hemmingodden is a perfect place for people who wants to experience Lofotfisket from a close view.

From May on there will also be other fish species nearby, and Hemmingodden will also then be a good starting point for fishing. There are several good fishing spots close to the cabins with opportunities to catch cod, halibut, redfish, pollock and catfish. Vestfjorden, Nappstraumen and Buksnesfjorden are all just a quick boat ride away. If the wind happens to be strong one place, it is always possible to find shelter another place.
From January 1st to April 1st, the weather can be somewhat unstable. During this period you will only have to pay for the boat during the days where the weather allows you to use it. If the weather is not great, an option for you can be one of the bigger boats with a captain on board. This can be either “Marie” or “Hemmingodden Jr”. We take the weather for consideration when renting out all boats.

Short about the northern lights: Electrically charged particles are catapulted off the surface of the sun in the aftermath of powerful solar storms. Some of these particles travel towards Earth. When they reach our planet, they are conducted along the protective magnetic fields towards the magnetic north and south poles. In a ring-shaped pattern around the magnetic poles, the particles encounter the upper layers of the atmosphere. In a process identical to the one that occurs inside a fluorescent light, energy is released as light that we can observe from the earth. Most northern lights-displays take place at a height of around 100 km above the earth’s surface. Often we see three green bands across the night sky. Or the lights come as flickering curtains or rolling smoke. The colour is a luminous green, often with a hint of pink along the edge, and occasionally with a deep violet centre. The northern lights belt stretches along the coast of Northern Norway from Lofoten to the North Cape. This means that Northern Norway is the perfect place to observe this natural phenomenon. In fact, the northern lights are more commonly seen here than anywhere else in the world.

We depart at 0600 hours, and estimate to be out for six hours. We expect that time to be sufficient to find the good fishing spots, and secure a rich catch. Our 48-foot cutter is certified for 38 passengers and has 12 fishing stations. The maximum number of passengers for our hard-core trips is thus 12, so that everyone has a dedicated and permanent station. We help you with slaughtering the fish on board, and offer to vacuum pack the fish ashore if you want.

MS Symra is a traditional fishing cutter, and she turns 100 years old in 2017. She is protected by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage. Symra is a comfortable boat originally built specifically for Lofotfisket, and she is certified for 38 passengers.

What will you experience?
You are invited to our main office at the pier in Svolvær port, and will be welcomed by your hosts and crew. Our crew are professional fishermen and know these seas like their own back pocket. They provide all the necessary information about what you can expect from the day out, safety on board, and they will teach you how to use the fishing tools and equipment featured on board. We then sail out of Svolvær, past the Fisherman’s Wife statue, and head out to the fishing banks we know from experience can provide a good catch, with location varying depending on the season.

We must always take weather precautions on our fishing trips, but do our utmost to go out. If weather hampers fishing on the day in question, we arrange another the next day, or you will be offered alternative activities.

Main season for Lofotfisket: ca. 25 February to 15 April
The skrei does not arrive by time table, so we do not know in advance exactly when the skrei schools glide into Vestfjorden each year, but the likelihood of catching skrei during this time is high.

Fishing trips in this period are arranged weekly on Wednesdays 0600-1200.
Price: NOK 1,750 per person.

Other timings as well as group outings can be arranged on request.

What should you bring and wear?
The weather at sea in Lofoten can change rapidly, which is some of the charm of these isles. Fishermen have over hundreds of years learnt what is suitable clothing at sea, and we recommend the same for our guests.
Please wear:
• Wool underwear, which isolates and breathes
• Fleece, wool sweater or another insulating middle layer
• Hat, mittens that you are not too precious about getting some fish smell on, and boots or heavy gore-tex shoes.

Included from our side:
• Suitable fishing kit
• Dedicated fishing station on board
• Safety suit which makes you float, and waterproof work clothes
• Footwear, mittens and hat as necessary
• Hot beverages
• Our experienced crew and the fishing trip

Can be purchased:
Packed lunch: NOK 199
Vacuum packing of the catch: NOK 249 (two bags)
