Sørvågen Radio-a Telecom Museum

LOCAL AND NATIONAL TELECOM HISTORY Why did the first morse code signal in Northern Europe emanate from the telegraph station in Sorvagen, far west of Lofoten, in 1906? The telegraph was developed as early as 1861, with Sorvagen as the terminus. Why? And where were these signals sent? To which ship was the same wireless message sent in 1908?

Our Telecom Museum, Sørvågen Radio at Sørvågen provides answers to these and many other questions. The museums exhibition appeals to many age groups and interests, with its rich collection of newer and older pieces related to the topic. The information is visual and funny. Check out the exhibition of mobile phones and compare your own with the 1973 edition – there’s quite a difference!
There are not only phones and old switchboards, but also a good explanation as to why Lofoten and Sørvågen were among the first to adopt modern technology.

The museum is located in the “Telebygget” from 1914, designed by Georgine (Lilla) Hansen (1872-1962), the fist female achitect of Norway.

For updated opening hours please check the Museum`s website at Museum Nord!

Apartments - Livland Gård

The apartments are located down by the harbor where you can stay in high comfort, and watch the boats that come and go. The fantastic ocean views and the surrounding mountains make this a unique accommodation.

Fishing has been the most important industry in Lofoten since the dawn of time. At times, the cod / dryfish was the one thing that provided Norway with export revenue. The fisheries that built the nation of Norway, and especially the Lofoten fishery was important. Laukvik was one of the places on the outer side of the coast that was established on the basis of fishing, and with the small agricultural properties that lay around this became an active community.

The Fisherman farmer was a well-known concept where the family fed on fishing and farming. The owners and managers of Livland are today's "fishermen", but now they combine experience production and agriculture. The apartments are located down by the harbor where you can stay in high comfort, and watch the boats that come and go. The fantastic ocean views and the surrounding mountains make this a unique accommodation.

Kaffepause - coffee break with the locals

Blend in with the locals over a cup of coffee.

Based on Norwegians' unique relationship with coffee - we actually drink second most in the whole world - you can book a meeting with a local in Lofoten on the website www.kaffepause.org. If you want to become better acquainted with local customs, traditions, stories, myths - and the daily life north of the Arctic Circle - this is for you.

Some visitors say it can be difficult to get to know us Norwegians - we have a reputation for being a little shy and introverted. We do not want to change this with Kaffepause: We are who we are and that is good enough. What we want to do is open the door ajar and give Norwegians and visitors an opportunity to meet each other and share the joy of a cup of coffee. Everyone who have tried the service describes it as a wonderful experience. Take a chance and sign up as a coffee guest! You won't regret it.

Reinebringen

Photo: Kristin Folsland Olsen - visitnorway.com

Tour description

As always, hiking in Lofoten is at your own risk, so make sure you follow the path and watch out. Even if the path towards the top follows the Sherpa steps, it is very steep and parts of it can be demanding. You follow the stairs built into the steep mountain side and if you need a break, there are several nice spots with benches built along the path, allowing you a rest before the last few metres. The stairs finish ca 100 metres before the top, so make sure you walk very carefully and watch out for loose rocks. If a rock comes loose, it may roll down the mountain side and cause injury to other people hiking up the stairs further down. The hike is not recommended for young children and for safety reasons, this hike is strictly not recommended in the winter season.

Reinebringen is far from one of the highest mountains in Lofoten, but the view from the top of Reinebringen is known for being one of the most spectacular ones. It is a favourite among many hikers and you will soon understand why when you reach the top. Sit down and enjoy the great view over the picturesque Reine village and the wild fjords and mountains. We also recommend the hike during the midnight sun season in Lofoten, as it is maybe even more beautiful at that time. And not least, there may be less people. The hike is extremely popular among locals and tourists alike.

It is very important to wear sturdy shoes, take plenty of water to drink and a wind proof jacket. An extra set of dry clothes is also recommended. And do not forget a fully charged camera battery, so you can bring your memories with you back home. But do not forget to enjoy the moment!

It could be that the mountain is closed during parts of the summer 2020 in order to complete the work on the steps. It is therefore a good idea to visit the Reinebringen Facebook page for updated information, or visit the local tourist information. As of January 2020, the mountain path had 1566 steps and several benches along the beautifully built Sherpa steps. You can read more about Reine and surrounding areas on Wikipedia.

Parking

If you decide to travel to see Reinebringen and arrive by car – you find parking at Reine Ytre Havn (outer harbour). This is where the hike starts. You first walk through the centre of beautiful Reine towards Reinehalsen (viewpoint by the main road) and then walk further along the E10 direction Å. Follow the old road outside of the tunnel. You find this at the left side of the road, outside the road fence. If you arrive by bus, the nearest bus stop is «Reine kryss» (Moskenes).

More useful advice

  • If you require an experienced tour guide to accompany you on a hike, you may book hikes in many beautiful Lofoten mountains here.
  • Take care of Lofoten when you visit – read more about how to be a responsible guest

Frequently asked questions:

Is it true that there may be rock falls?

Yes, that’s correct. Rock falls may occur in the mountains. There are ca 150 steps left to be completed in the Sherpa stairs. So please take extra care when you walk up the stairs and look out for loose rocks.

Is it correct that Reinebringen may be closed at times?

Reinebringen has been closed at times due to work on the steps up the mountain. There will not be any work done on the path during the autumn of 2020, because of the corona virus. Please visit the Reinebringen Facebook page for updated and correct information about the Reinebringen path.

Can I do the hike if I am scared of heights?

Some parts of the hike can be very steep and «airy», and even if most of the path is built on steps, the hike is considered to be of medium difficulty.

When will the remaining steps be finished?

Reinebringen will be closed when the remaining steps are being built, but this will not be done before the autumn 2022 because of the corona virus. We recommend that you visit the Reinebringen Facebook page for updates.

Is the hike suitable for children?

The hike can be suitable for young people who do not suffer from fear of heights. We do not recommend the hike for small children.

From early fall, during the whole winter till mid-April, we are awaiting the magnificent shows appearing after solar storms. The size of the group varies from 3-14. If you are a larger group this can be arranged.

Seakayaking full day - Lofoten Aktiv

To paddle sea kayak is the fantastic way to experience the alpine archipelago Lofoten and its unique flora and fauna on.

Lofoten Aktiv offers guided sea kayak tours in quiet and peaceful venues in our beautiful seascape.

This is the most popular activity, especially the Trollfjord trip. On all Lofoten Aktiv kayak tours we have a guide/instructor per 6-7 participants (with certain exceptions about the group composition/knowledge allows for it). Because of the landscape we live in and a nature that cannot withstand unsustainable use, we have not larger seakayak groups than 10 participants.

Our guides focus on the cultural and natural history of the area we live in, and conservation is embedded in everything we do. If required, provide guides your basic tips on paddling technique.

Join Lofoten Activities on tour and discover our wild and beautiful Lofoten from a sea kayak.

Included in the trip is the guide, seakayak (double) with paddles, spraydecks, vests, jackets and poogies (paddle mittens).

You should bring clothes that work in the weather of the day and snack, food an beverage for the day.

A mandatory requirement to attend our activities is that you must have a valid travel insurance policy that covers all activities that Lofoten Aktiv AS offers. This insurance must subscribe before beginning a trip to Lofoten.

Viking Experience

Meet the Vikings. Smell the tar, taste the food, feel the history. The Vikings have been awaiting you for more than 1000 years. Experience the Viking age, going direct from the pier.

A short drive through rich, rolling farmland brings you to the Lofotr Viking Museum. Built around the discovery of the largest Viking longhouse ever found, the centerpiece is a reconstruction of that longhouse. Oil lamps flicker, smoke curls up from the fireplace, statues of the old gods stand among intricate wood carvings and walls hung with furs. Craftspeople weave, work leather and carve.

It's only the flash of cameras that remind you you're still in the present. And because the objects in the longhouse are replicas, you can get a little bit closer to the past by donning a helmet, picking up a sword, and playing Viking to your heart’s content!

The museum's other building houses the archaeological finds from the site, as well as an exhibition on the site's discovery, the souvenir shop, and a café.

Traditional fishing villages, steep mountains, white sand beaches, dried fish, stunning roads and bridges, this tour really provides everything in one amazing day.

Due to busy roads and rapidly changing weather conditions, we want to acknowledge that the route may change on the day, regardless below you can find a list of our 5 favourite locations that we want to explore with you!

1. Kabelvåg

Kabelvåg is an important historical fishing village located just 5 Kilometers (3.1 Miles) and about a 10 minute drive from Svolvær. This village is a popular day visit and offers a picturesque atmosphere with its blend of historic importance and modern updates of a typical Norwegian coastal town, known for its cod fishing. In the middle ages Kabelvåg became the most important cod fishing harbours on the Norwegian coast, and contributed to the dry cod from “Nordland” accounting for almost 80% of Norway's export in the 13th century.

Kabelvåg has traces of settlements from the late stone age, and now offers attractions such as the Lofoten Museum, Lofoten Aquarium and Vågan Church (known as the Lofoten Cathedral).

2. Haukland Beach

Haukland Beach is one of Lofoten’s most famous beach and hike, located on the westside on Lofoten. The caribbean like-waters, mountain landscape in the background, and white sand beach make Haukland Beach, a popular destination for travelers and photo-seekers year round.

Haukland beach is Lofoten’s “swimming beach”, although the water temperatures don’t reach above 15 degrees, you’ll see locals and tourists enjoying the water in the summer sun (water temperatures range from 3-15 degrees). Haukland beach is a unique destination in Lofoten as it offers the possibility to easy access from the road that takes you all the way to the beach.

3. Hamnøy Bridge

Hamnøy Bridge is yet another very photogenic location in the outer parts of Lofoten. The bridge connects the island Hamnøya with the island of Toppøya, and is one of the most popular viewpoints for photography in all of Lofoten.

Logistics on the small island can be challenging, due to the volume of visitors passing by, but the rewarding views are worth the effort of a short leg stretcher around the island, the view’s won't disappoint you! Traditionally Hamnøy was connected to Reine by ferry, but replaced by this beautiful bridge as part of European route E10.

4. Sakrisøya

Sakrisøya is a very small island just North of Reine and West of Hamnøy bridge. It’s probably one of the most photogenic islands in scandinavia, and every day a large amount of visitors drive through the small village. A unique blend between a traditional fishing village, with the sound and smell of the ocean with stunning views of the dramatic mountain landscape in the background is a dream for every photographer and explorer. On the island we’ll find a fishing industry, small cabins for rent and a dolls & toy museum.

5. Reine

This small fishing village on the outer part of Lofoten offers an absolutely stunning view and attracts thousands of visitors each year. With a permanent population of only just above 300 people, the picturesque feeling of a small town vibe shaped by the atlantic waves is an experience you will remember for a lifetime. Reine is located just southwest of Sakrisøya, and as we drive through the landscape the narrow roads and bridges between the villages is breathtaking to say the least.

Arctic Sail Safari to Trollfjord

Trollfjord is one of Norway’s most famous fjords, know for its stunning beauty, steep mountain range and narrow inlets. There is so much life in the fjords where seabirds, eagles and fish thrives and occasionally seals and porpoises can be seen.

The tour starts in the fishing village and municipality “Svolvær” where we sail out in the arctic summer morning with direction east, towards the famous Trollfjord. The first 30 minutes offers some great sailing and where appropriate with the weather, your skipper will hoist the sails towards the island “Stormolla”. The following journey towards Trollfjord is a cruise in protected waters passing unforgettable views of steep mountains, white sandy beaches along parts of the shoreline and crystal clear arctic waters.

Cruising through the narrow entrance to Trollfjorden itself is a treat for all senses, and it’s easy to understand why this relatively remote location is attracting visitors from all over the planet. When you have witnessed Trollfjord, you have experienced one of the most special fjords of Norway, and we highly recommend it! After several years, taking thousands of our guests out sailing in the fjords, we have taken our time to create this ultimate fjord experience in Lofoten. With small groups, counting to a maximum or 12 guests per tour, this experience provides a cosy atmosphere with possibility to part take in sailing, fishing and learning from our skippers/guides.

When we reach Trollfjord, we will anchor the boat to spend some time in this beautiful nature area. Your skipper will help you launch stand up paddleboards which is a truly unique experience we can warm-hearded recommend. Trollfjord itself is spectacular, but being on a paddleboard gives you a feeling of being extra connected with the nature and you can get close to the beautiful rockformations and waterfall.

This is an actionfilled day and we aren't finished yet - on the way back your skipper will take you to one of the many excellent fishing grouds. No previous fishing experience is needed to participate in this activity, and you are welcome to bring the fish you catch with you home after the tour.

Kayak Nature Safari

You cannot get closer to nature than this! Our 3 hour nature safari takes you out on a kayak trip out of the ordinary. Together with our experienced guide you will be introduced to Lofotens bird and marine life.

The combination of silence, raw nature on all sides, and full freedom of motion, makes sea kayaking one of our most popular adventures.

Lofoten’s nature has unique and spectacular contrasts and kayaking is a great way to experience these. When you embark in a sea kayak you practically sit on the surface of the sea and can navigate it using your own bodily strength.

You can appreciate Lofoten’s dramatic mountains from a wholly new perspective when you paddle up close to them. It is an experience almost as majestic as standing on top of them.

You receive a solid introduction before we embark on the double kayaks from Nyvågar in Kabelvåg where our knowledgeable guides meet you 30 minutes before departure.

The weather in Lofoten changes a lot from day to day, which is some of the charm of the islands. You should dress to suit the weather, and our recommendation is that on a cold summer day you wear wool underwear. Bring a water bottle too.
Other timings and group arrangements on request.

Låven at Hov

In May 2018 we finished restoring the barn above the stables and made it a cozy restaurant and coffee shop. Here we serve tasty local and short-lived food, delicious coffee & homebaked cakes. The barn is opened every day and seats up to 100 guests.

The venue has all rights and is opened to all kinds of arrangements. Combine the dining experience on the barn with a horseback ride, a hike on the Hoven or just a stroll on the beautiful Hov beach. One of Europe’s best golf courses Lofoten Links and Lofoten Links Lodges, with perhaps Lofoten’s highest standard of accommodation, is located within a walking distance.

The restoration of the barn from the 1950s started already in 2016 and has been going on for over a year. The work was carried out by local contractors and by the farm’s own employees. To the north we have installed large windows that give beautiful view to the ocean, midnight sun and the northern lights. The tables are handmade with 100-year-old timbers by our neighbor craftswoman and the lights in the ceiling are the original milk tanks from the farm. We have taken care of the original construction so that the room gives a very authentic and rustic feel. At the same time, it is insulated according to today’s requirements and is warm and inviting throughout the year. The large fireplace and the soft retro-style chairs create a nice atmosphere even on dark winter evenings. Here you can enjoy a great meal, contemplate the view with a group of friends or just relax by the fireplace with a good book and a local beer. We are prepared to host also the youngest customers with a kids corner full of games and toys and a simple menu for kids.

The venue is as well suitable for meetings, workshops and conferences and can be reserved for this throughout the year. In the ceiling we have installed a high-class projector as well as a large canvas for film screenings and presentations. This together with a professional soundsystem and acoustic panels make the barn the perfect place for whole-day meetings and smaller conferences, as well as courses in northern lights photography and lectures or discussions.

Set up your next arrangement, Christmas table or company meeting at Låven, combined with horseback or golf activities and accommodation at Lofoten Links.

Linken in Svolvær (105 m)

Linken is a short and easy walk for both children and grown-ups. You can also follow this route on the way to Tjeldbergtinden in Svolvær.

On the way up to Linken. Photo: @isabellaeinarsen

Information about Linken

Parking: In the centre of Svolvær.

Season: All year.

Distance: 1.9 km (one way) or 3.8 km (round trip).

Altitude: 152 metres above sea level.

Duration: 1 hour (round trip).

Difficulty: Easy (green). Suitable for everyone.

Starting point: Central square in Svolvær.

View towards Linken (taken from Tjeldbergtinden). Photo: @isabellaeinarsen

Tour description

This walk makes it easy to reach a high viewpoint without having to climb to a high altitude. Not everybody is inclined to climb steep hills or go for long hikes, so Linken is the perfect walk if you want easy access to a high viewpoint.

This walk is nice all year. But if you walk here in the wintertime, please remember to check the weather forecast before you go, as it may be slippery with ice and snow.

Linken/Tjeldbergaksla are a small distance from the centre of Svolvær, but still easy to get to. Linken is a small hilltop on the way up to Tjelbergtinden.

If you arrive by car, you can park in the city centre and walk to the fire station. It takes ca 30 minutes to walk from the centre of Svolvær to where the road is closed near the fire station, which is the starting point for the walk.

If you walk from the city centre, follow the cycle road towards Kabelvåg and exit the main road by the Esso petrol station. From Esso, you follow the road until you come to the fire station on your left hand side. Take a left just before the fire station and follow the road until you come to a sign pointing to "Tjeldbergtind". From here you follow the gravelled road all the way up to the top of Linken.

The road up the hill is very nice and surrounded by trees. On the way up, you will see the city of Svolvær and the beautiful mountains Løva and Kongstindan behind you. When you come to the mast, you follow the small path behind the house by the main mast and then walk ca 150 metres to the viewpoint on the southern end.

If you would like a longer and steeper walk, you can follow the sign for Tjelbergtinden. This route goes further up to 352 metres above sea level.

Galleri Eggum

Galleri Eggum

In Gallery Eggum , you are coming close to the nature of Lofoten. You will find paintings and graphic art made by Rolf Aarøe Arnesen. He is keen to convey the dramatic changes and the changing light- and color ratio in the nature of Lofoten. He is not only showing nature, but also another part of his art, which is more impressionistic, spontaneous, simplified and with an enhanced coloration.

Gallery Eggum is located 4.6 km from the exit towards Eggum, from the E10 at Bøstad. It is a small gallery in idyllic surroundings and is located on the outside of Lofoten's harsh coast. The gallery is actually a small farm from 1878 which is partially converted into a gallery.
The small farm also consists of an original Nordlandshus from the specified year, which is no longer often seen.
The gallery has free admission.
In the barn building you can see the gallery. Here Rolf Aarøe Arnesen shows about 60 different paintings and prints. Most of the motives are taken from Lofoten's changing natural impressions.
In addition to paintings, different print formats are presented, in different price ranges.
In the same building you can see the antique department, which sells art glass, old porcelain and old glass.
Serving:
Outside the corona period, hot, 6-hearted waffles with sour cream and jam, cinnamon rolls and coffee / tea are sold! This you can enjoy outside in several idyllic seating areas or inside the newly built gazebo. Or maybe you prefer the coffee in "Gamelbua" which is original inside from 1878! The choice is yours. All with a view of the beautiful Lofoten nature, there on the outermost site of Lofoten.

About 4 kilometers further from the gallery you come to the small town Eggum, which from ancient times was mostly inhabited by fishermen and sheep farmers. It is a charming dense settlement with small houses. Out here the road stops in a recreation area. This is a favorite exit to a lot of motorhome tourists. Here you have a full view of the midnight sun. A 15-minute walk further you can see the much talked about work of art "the head", a sculpture by Markus Raetz 'in connection with Kulturlanskap Nordland.

Fløya and Djevelporten (590 m)

Fløya is a proud mountain, towering over Svolvær in Lofoten with the famous and characteristic Svolværgeita in front. On the hike up to this mountain you will pass Djevelporten («The Devil’s Gate”), which is a large rock stuck in a gorge. There are also Sherpa stairs, called Djeveltrappa («The Devil’s Stairs») - an attraction in itself.

Sherpatrappa Fløya

Photo: Sherpa stairs leading up to Djevelporten and Fløya - Sissel Hansen

Fløya is Svolvær’s local mountain, and it has become even more popular with the Sherpa stairs going almost all the way up the mountain side. If you walk up to Fløya, you get a fantastic view over «Lofoten’s capital». Svolvær has 4700 inhabitants, and this is the area with the biggest population in the archipelago. Svolvær has a small airport and it is the port of call for both Hurtigruten, ferries and the express boat. In this small, big city you find a large selection of restaurants, galleries, shops and accommodation. The tourist information is at the central square, and they have plenty of tips about everything that Lofoten has to offer. What about kayaking in the harbour of Svolvær or a boat trip to the Trollfjord? You find more information about Svolvær on Wikipedia.

The path starts at the parking. Follow the Sherpa stairs to the end and then continue on the path. The path will soon split in two directions. Follow the path that goes straight ahead. The path will turn eastwards and then it goes up a wide valley. From the top of the valley you will see directly over to Djevelporten, the rock that is stuck in the gorge. This is a very steep and exposed part of the hike and it is very risky to go out onto Djevelporten.

The path up to Fløya continues upwards and in an arc shape along the mountain side. When you arrive at the top point you will have a magnificent view over Svolvær and the Vestfjord. It is not possible to go down at the front of Svolværgeita to get a view over the city. Follow the same path down or a path marked Lofoten High5 in blue and white.

If you want to reach the very highest point you need to climb up a steep and demanding 2–3 metre long passage.

Parking

The hike starts right outside the centre of Svolvær. There is a parking area to the northwest of the church yard, just where the Blåtindveien makes a narrow curve. But this parking fills up quickly and it may be easier to park in the city centre. The path leads you from the parking and up the hill.

After a short walk you come to the Sherpa stairs – or «Djeveltrappa» – as it is called by the locals. The work on the stairs started in 2019 and will be continued.

These stairs make it easier to reach a higher altitude, as long as your thigh muscles allow it. Luckily, there are several nice benches along the way, where you can relax and enjoy the view.

Chose the right path

When you come to the part where the terrain flattens out, the path splits in two directions. One direction goes to the right towards Svolværgeita, which is where you go to climb the famous mountain. If this is what you would like to do, you can find out about available mountains guides from the tourist information.

If you are going to Fløya you follow the path that goes straight ahead. After a while the path turns eastwards and then it goes through a wide valley, which ends in a gorge between the Frosken and Fløya mountains. There is a footbridge across the marsh. The terrain upwards is quite steep and craggy.

Steep and exposed

When you reach the top of the gorge you see the Djevelporten directly in front of you. This is the large rock stuck between the two mountain sides. This is a very steep and exposed area and it is very risky to go out onto the Djevelporten. Please be very careful if you decide to do this.

The path towards Fløya continues upwards in an arc shape along the mountain side. The path is good, but it goes through exposed terrain on the very edge of a cliff. When you arrive at the top you will have a magnificent view of the Vestfjord and Svolvær under your feet! On top of this mountain you will have plenty of space to enjoy a break. It is not possible to go down from the mountain in front of Svolværgeita – with a view towards the city. Follow the same path down or a path marked Lofoten High5 in blue and white.

If you want to reach the very highest point, you need your hands and feet to climb up a steep and challenging 2–3 metre long passage. After that, you can walk the last few metres to the top, which is marked with a cairn.

Please be aware that the steep passage can be even more demanding when you are going back down, especially in wet weather!

Frequently asked questions:

Is this hike suitable for families?

Yes, the Sherpa stairs are fine for older children. There are several steep parts and some quite demanding parts. After the stairs there are some areas that require climbing.

Kvalvika and Ryten (543 m)

Kvalvika and Ryten in Lofotenodden national park are some of the most popular hiking areas in Lofoten. And there is a good reason for that. The view from the top of Ryten far down to the long golden beach is second to none.

Information about Kvalvika/Ryten

Starting point: At the Indresand parking.

Season: Spring, summer and autumn. In the winter on skis or with snow shoes.

Distance: 3.5 km directly to the top, 3 km directly to the beach.

Altitude: 543 metres above sea level.

Difficulty: Easy.

Duration: 1.5 hours (one way) to the beach. 2 hours (one way) to Ryten.

The hike to Kvalvika and Ryten attracts many people. This is where you experience the typical nature in Lofoten with steep mountains cliffs, emerald green sea and an impressive sandy beach, where it is tempting to go for a swim in the waves.

This hike is relatively easy and suitable for families who enjoy hiking in the mountains. There are several alternative routes, so you can decide if you prefer the long or the short version.

Kvalvika is on the island Moskenesøy, but it belongs to the municipality of Flakstad. This area is known for its beautiful sandy beaches. In addition to Kvalvika, we also recommend the beaches at Yttersand, Ramberg and Skagsanden, which are worth a visit if you enjoy walking barefoot on the white coral sand.

The nearest shopping centre in this area is in Ramberg, which is 7 km from Indresand, where you start the hike. Ramberg has a petrol station, shops, tourist information, restaurants, cafes and accommodation. There are also a variety of water sport activities for children and grown-ups.

You find more information about Kvalvika and the surrounding area on Wikipedia.

Parking at Indresand

Many people enjoy going to Kvalvika. The previous parking in Torsfjorden cannot be used anymore because of the traffic problems. We recommend instead that you park at Indresand and start your hike from there. There is a sing pointing to this parking once you have crossed the Fredvang bridges. To consider the environment, we recommend that you take the shuttle bus. You find more information about this service  here.

If the parking at Indresand is full, you can park by the school and pay 50 kr (via Vipps if possible) for a private car. You also find charging points for electrical cars at the school parking, as well as clean drinking water and rubbish bins.

Easy terrain

From the parking, follow the sign to the path towards Einangen. This is a good path that goes through an easy terrain with small crags and hills. The path goes to the north of the lake Einangsvannet and south of the hill 290. Remember not to disturb the sheep and keep your dog on a leash.

Continue further up until you see the lake Forsvatnet further down on your left hand side. This is where the path splits in two directions, so you need to decide if you want to continue up to the top of the mountain or go directly down to the beach.

If you decide to go to the top of Ryten first, you just follow the path up the hill. The path divides into different routes. If you follow the path that goes along the edge on the left, you get the most spectacular view. But the cliffs are very steep, so please be careful!

Magnificent views

Kvalvika - Sissel Hansen, Destination Lofoten

The view down to Kvalvika beach is impressive. Steep cliffs rise up on each side of the bay and create a beautiful frame around the beach.

When you approach the top of Ryten, the terrain becomes flatter. From the cairn at the top you get a great view over the open sea towards the north. What about doing this hike to see the midnight sun?

After having hiked to the top, many people like to go down to the beach. Maybe for a refreshing swim? Follow the path back down to the lake Forsvatnet and then follow the path from there down the hill towards the beach.

Round trip alternatives

You can make a round trip if somebody can drop you off and pick you up somewhere else along the route. The shortest route is from Kvalvika, over Skoren and down to Torsfjorden. The return trip can be cut shorter by going down to Torsfjorden on the eastern side of the lake Markvannet.

Frequently asked questions:

Is this hike suitable for families?

Yes, the hikes down to Kvalvika and up to Ryten are both suitable for families. The path is good and not very demanding, even for young children. You may need to estimate double time if you bring small children. And you need to decide if you prefer alternative hikes that could be more enjoyable for the children.

Can you use a drone in the Kvalvika and Ryten area?

No, Kvalvika and Ryten are in the Lofotodden national park. In order to protect animal life and outdoor life, un-necessary noise must be avoided and the use of drones are not permitted in the Lofotodden national park.

Can you bring a dog to Kvalvika and Ryten?

Yes, but you need to keep your dog on a leash from the 1st of April to the 15th of November. Flakstad municipality has extended restrictions for dogs in order to protect grazing animals in the area. The path is suitable for dogs, but you may need to carry your dog over certain parts on the way down to Kvalvika.

Sail, Hike & Fishing tour to Skrova

This is the perfect experience for those looking to get out on an easy, fun and eventuful tour from Svolvær with a chance to go sailing, hike to beautiful beaches and have a go at fishing.

After only a short sail from Svolvær we can reach Skrova & Litlmolla which are two stunning island groups, Litlmolla is unhabited while Skrova has a population of about 200 people. Although the population is small, Skrova is a very active place where you can find for example a school, restaurants, bakery, grocery stores & kindergarden. Skrova has the most sunhours of Lofoten and is home to several of the most beautiful beaches around Lofoten - therefore it is sometimes called the 'Hawaii of Lofoten'.

Your skipper will greet you in the harbor of Svolvær where our comfortable catamaran is located and after a short briefing we cruise out of the harbor. Onboard the boat you find comfortable seating both inside (heated saloon) and outside (trampoline & beanbags). Enjoy a fresh cup of coffee, your favourite selection of tea, or just the purest arctic water, while your skipper navigates towards tonights destination.

After about 45 minutes of sailing we reach Litlmolla, that looks more like a scenery directly taken from a Jurasic Park film. Just soak in the nature, spot Eagles and other sea birds while we continue the navigation towards Skrova. On Skrova we can go on land to strech our legs and explore the island for abour 1.5 hours (it takes about 30 minutes one way to go to the sandy beaches in the photos). (psst... there is also a place for ice cream/coffee/small lunch here as an option if you need a bite).

When we are ready to head back towards Svolvær, your skipper will take you to one of favoruite fishing spots to try your luck at fishing. If you catch anything you are welcome to bring this with you back home!

This is a relaxing yet fun experience and something we strongy recommend while in Lofoten.
