Travel

We recommend all our customers to travel as environmentally friendly as possible. Travelling by train, or driving together is the best option. Traveling slowly also adds a whole other dimension to your vacation, rather than just flying above all the beautiful places our country has to offer.

Changes in the program

This program is a rough outline program as an ambition for the week. As we sail along we will adapt to weather conditions and there might be changes in the program. The aim however remains the same; to have the most amazing week possible. Ski and Sail Lofoten - Seil Norge

March 18 - March 22, 2020 - 5 days - NOK 16.800 March 23 - March 29, 2020 - 7 days - NOK 21.300 April 3 - April 7, 2020 - 5 days - NOK 16.800 This is a trip for those who like the idea of alpine skiing and randonné in the untouched Lofoten-mountains of northern Norway. It's a trip for travellers wanting a more challenging holiday - for those who would like to experience something unique, wild, breathtaking and beautiful - no matter if you're experienced or a beginner we welcome you to our Ski and Sail adventure.

The Lofoten isles make out some of the rawest nature Norway has to offer. The area is famous for it's alpine mountains and peaks, and there are great numbers of natural pistes, offering possibilities and options for a wide range of skiers. Most of the trips offer 700 - 1000 meters of altitude and descents, and the skiing most often ends down on the beach. Many of the most spectacular places are available only by boat. That, our friends, is why we sail.

During these 5/7 days we'll explore and reach many of the most beautiful mountains in Lofoten, and in between we'll get much sailing done between one place on our way to the other. The trip starts and ends in Svolvær. The skiing we'll plan together with the skiguide, is adjusted towards the level of the group as well as weather and conditions. After skiing in the morning we'll sail in the afternoon towards the next mountain for the next day. This is an active trip where the outdoor experiences are in focus; either behind the wheel of the boat or with skiis on our legs.

On this trip we have with us a skiguide onboard for the whole trip. The guide is with us also as teacher and coach, and makes it possible for us to also do more challenging skiing and summits. Of the different places we will pass or visit along the way we can mention Svolvær, Austnesfjorden, Geitgaljertind, Trollfjord and Raftsundet

Itinerary (example of a 5 day trip)

Day 1 - Meeting on the dock in Svolvær
Day 2 - Sailing and skiing
Day 3 - Skiing
Day 4 - Skiing
Day 5 - Early morning skiing and sailing back

What is really Ski and Sail?

It's a concept where we use our sailboats as a floating chalet; we sail to the foot of the mountains and start our skiing right on the beach. By boat we are flexible, mobile and can move from place to place, and choose hillsides, faces and our areas according to the present conditions we have. Ski and Sail is a concept done by italian and french alpinists since early 1990's, and a concept that norwegians recently have started to appreciate. We in SailNorway have arranged Ski and Sail in Helgeland, Steigen, Lofoten, Lyngen and Finnmark for many years, and we dare say we know many of the best places to ski along the coast.

Experience level on this trip - medium

This trip takes some experience from randonee / skiing but you do not need to be advanced. If you do have a lot of experience it is only positive, and you will be able to challenge yourself. Those with more experience often want to run steeper, and may even do multiple runs in one day. As organizers we try to keep the level as equal as we can, so that we can choose mountains according to the level of the group. If you are in doubt this is the right trip for you, you are welcome to contact us at any time - even you are beginner or experienced.
This is a sailing trip possible to do for most travellers! Sailing-wise the trip is not particularly difficult, but you must be prepared for sailing in rough weather. If you are a beginner, we want to turn you into a sailor as quickly as possible, and if you're experienced you'll get challenges and responsibility accordingly.

Travel

We recommend all our customers to travel as environmentally friendly as possible. Traveling by train, or driving together is the best option. Traveling slowly also adds a whole other dimension to your vacation, rather than just flying above all the beautiful places our country has to offer.

Changes in the program

You may see the program as a plan that we adjust according to weather and conditions. If we're in a place without snow, we set sail to where there is more snow! With the sailboat we are flexible so we can find the best snow. Onboard we have with us a dinghy for trips ashore, we have fishing gear for the cod, and we have what we need to make a bonfire and have fun ashore. We are ready foran adventure. Are you?

Climb and Sail - Steigen and Stetind

August 5 - August 13, 2020 - NOK 22.500 Join us climbing and sailing among Norway's national treasures! We sail from island to mountain, to experience, see and learn. We play in the wind, in the water, in the fjord, in the archipelago and in the high mountains!

This trip offers some of the most amazing and beautiful nature experiences Norway has to offer. For quite a while we have wanted to offer a trip where we sail from mountain to mountain, and climb some of the most beautiful peaks in the area. We are now casting off, and docking at the entrance to some of Norway's most spectacular climbing tours!

Moving around by sailboat is the best way to travel in these areas, and it is very convenient. From the sailboat close to land we can admire and study the mountains we are ascending, and then we just go ashore and up there.
Are you ready for next year's sailing and climbing adventure ?!

We start and end this trip in Bodø. First we sail to Steigen and through Mannshausen, the expedition island of Børge Ousland, a very good starting point for climbing the nearby Nordskott-traverse. This is an airy, but manageable climb, which will give us a good idea of what is waiting in the mountains later in the week.

From Nordskott we continue to Hamarøy and Hamarøyskaftet, which is our next mountain to climb on this trip. This is a very special mountain in north-Norway; only 613 meters high, but still airy and with a great view.
From Hamarøy, the trip continues northwards and we pass by Tranøy Lighthouse, were we’ll possibly go ashore to have a look around.

The main objective of the trip is Stetind, Norway's national mountain! As an ambolt in granite it is towering Tysfjord, and even atheists can become religious by the sight of the mighty giant. We have skilled guides along the way and they will take us safely to the top of all the peaks.

If you want to experience the best of this area, then this is the trip for you! On our trips you get the variety and combination of pleasant evenings in the boat and mind-blowing mountain experiences during the daytime!

On this trip we will use our Humla sailing boat. Pictures and more information about our boats can be found here.

Itinerary

Day 1: Tour start in Bodø
Day 2: Sailing to Nordskott and Mannshausen
Day 3: Hefty Nordskot-travers and evening sailing to Hamarøy
Day 4: Hamarøyskaftet 613 m.a.s.l
Day 5: Sailing north
Day 6: "The ugliest mountain I ever saw" - Stetind
Day 7: Sailday to Bodø (reserve day for Stetind)
Day 8: Goodbye for this time!

Level of trip

Sailing-wise the trip is not particularly difficult, and you are very welcome to join no matter what sailing experience you have! If you are a beginner, we would like to make you a sailor as soon as possible, and if you are experienced you will have responsibility and greater challenges. You will contribute to the sailing, cooking and operation of the boat on this trip.

The climbs on this trip are not technically challenging, but there are some very airy parts along the way, which can make the heart beat a little faster. In general climbing is graded from 3 (which is very easy) to 9 - 10 (which is difficult, very difficult), the climbs we are going to do during this trip are in the 4's. If you have climbed a little before, if you are used to the mountains and have a steady foot and you do not have fear of heights, you will be able to complete this trip.

Safety

The guides on the trip are certified climbing instructors and active climbers, and always focus on safety. This also allows the program to change along the way. The peaks could be replaced with other great peaks in the area, if the situation would indicate that. Weather and conditions might lead to changes in the plan along the way, but the program is flexible and we make every effort to get to the planned peak. Our tour guides will make continuous evaluation and judgement of safety along the way.

We take safety seriously and on our trips we train on handling various situations that may occur at sea. Man-over-board, fire, abandoned vessel, broken mast, running aground are some of these. Building the participants' expertise on how to handle critical situations are key elements for better safety on board. On board the boat and on tour everyone must know what to do in potentially dangerous situations. For us, it is important that you as a guest quickly learn to be a participant onboard and not a passenger. It contributes to learning, sense of achievement and increased safety for boat and crew. That's why our tours are also considered as sailing courses and not a trip where you are a passive passenger.

Equipment

We provide all the common equipment. Those who sign up for the trip will receive a detailed equipment list before departure. Of personal climbing equipment that should be brought, are: helmet, harness, screwgate carabiner, belay device/rappel figure eight, 2 pcs. Prusik/hug knots. If you can not get the equipment before departure, you can rent the equipment package for NOK 650 per week.

Travel

If you have time, we always encourage to travel as environmentally friendly as possible. Traveling slowly also gives a different start to a vacation than traveling quickly. Nordlandsbanen train line goes all the way to Bodø, and by night from Oslo to Trondheim, it's a great journey from southern Norway. For timetables and prices see www.nsb.no If you live along the coast, the speed ferries or Hurtigruta are possible options either northbound or southbound. Another option is a flight to Bodø, and there are some reasonable tickets.

Accommodation

We live on board the sailing boat in double cabins, some with double beds, some with bunkbed (one over the other). It will not always be possible to shower every day because of limited fresh water capacity, but mostly every other day we are either in a harbor with enough fresh water or we will go to a place where we can borrow a shower. And of course this is a summer trip and then we usually bathe in the sea anyway.

During the tour everyone helps in the operation of the boat, and we all take turns cooking. Prior of the tour, we set up a menu and go grocery shopping. If you have allergies, please let us know. During the trip, we also sail by some of the area's best restaurants.

Changes in the program

This program should be viewed as a starting point that we adapt to the weather and conditions. We also reserve the right to continually improve the tour program for the better. With us along the way, we always have light boats for beach landings and small expeditions, we have fishing gear for the cod, and equipment for bonfires and trips ashore - we are ready for adventure!

Terms and conditions when it comes to mountain- and climbing tours:

The day to day program is indicative and changes may occur. We also refer to our general travel terms.

We take safety very seriously, and we reserve the right to make changes or cancel climbing-activity if reasons are compelling, such as bad weather, injuries or other circumstances. Participation is at your own risk. Payment for the trip is not refunded as a result of unforeseen events, injuries/weather or other circumstances. However, we have a whole week at our disposal and we will be playing in an area rich in nature and opportunities for alternative activities.

On the Trail of the Northern Lights

Unique among Lofoten's northern lights tours, Arctic Guide Service operates the only tour starting on the island of Vestvågøy, right in the middle of the Lofoten archipelago. The island's singular geography, combined with its central position, gives us so many more options when it comes to viewing the aurora. With beaches, mountain passes, fishing villages and neighbouring islands all within easy reach, the beauty of the northern lights will be perfectly complemented by the beauty of the surroundings they dance above.

When it comes to the northern lights, a camera “sees” much more than the human eye. For this reason, your guide will be someone with both experience and expertise in capturing this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon. They will provide you with a comprehensive explanation of how best to use your camera's settings to get the most memorable results.
In addition to your camera, we recommend you bring a tripod, and warm clothes and shoes. We'll provide a little extra warmth in the form of a hot drink and cookies!

Trolllfjord & Sea Eagle RIB Safari - Lofoten Explorer

Explore Lofoten along the coast with us. We take you safely to the magical Trollfjord, where the mountains are stretching 1000 meters high. On the way you will get a chance to meet the sea eagles, hopefully just a few meters from the boat. We guarantee an experience close to the elements. This is a 2 hours tour that fits the whole family.

The tour starts from the quayside in Svolvær every day throughout the year. We take you up through the strait of Øyhellsundet, in to Raftsundet and then in the end to the magnificent Trollfjord. Experience the magical nature, white sandy beaches and one of the most dramatic fjords in Norway. There is a large population of sea eagles in the area, so the possibilities to get a close-up view of the majestic bird is big. It’s the fourth largest eagle in the world with a wingspan up to 265 cm and a weight almost at 7 kg.
In a RIB-boat like this you`ll get close to the nature and the feeling for speed is definitely present. Our captains/guides have a high awareness on safety, some good stories and a lot of knowledge on the areas you pass along the tour. During the tour you will get stories from abandoned fishing settlements, Viking history, settlements from the Stoneage and the dramatic story from the battle in Trollfjorden in 1890. Lofoten from the seaside will guarantee give you memories for the rest of your life.
Everybody participating will get a floating suit, a life jacket, goggles and gloves. We recommend some good shoes! And warm clothes. (If its wintertime) Everybody needs to bring their camera.
(The route could be changed or canceled on short notice do to the weather or other circumstances that’s beyond our control.)

Meeting time at our office is 30 minutes before departure.

Hike Tjellbergtind - Lofoten Aktiv

We take you hiking up Tjellbergtinden, the mountain between Svolvær and Kabelvåg

In the mountains of Lofoten it´s not always easy to recognize the difference between a hiking path and the sheep trails. However, our guided hikes follow established paths, with views you will never forget. After a hike with a guide from Lofoten Aktiv you will have more knowledge about our landscapes and the different paths in the area.

This hike gives you the perfect overview of Svolvær, Kabelvåg, the Vestfjord with the mainland of Norway on the other side. A fairly steep ascent up to 352 m rewards you with a 360° panoramic view, perfect for your holiday selfies.

Northern Lights tour 3 hours - Lofoten Aktiv

The Northern light or The Aurora Borealis is an arctic experience not to be missed. It brings out spontaneous shouts of joy and excitement from participants of all ages.

From early fall, during the whole winter till mid-April, we are awaiting the magnificent shows appearing after solar storms. Not only the tourists from all around the world keep up the fascination for these extraordinary light shows, even the locals are often seen staring up at the night sky, amazed and with jaws dropped. The guides from Lofoten Aktiv are eager to chase and share the magical light phenomenon together with you.

During these 3 hours, we use the areas in the proximity of Vågan to search for areas with clear skies and perfect surroundings with as little light pollution as possible. The goal is to find areas where the northern lights will be our only source of light.

The size of the group varies from 3-14. If you are a larger group this can be arranged.

Get ready for a magical night together with us in Lofoten Aktiv! Take an afternoon nap, put on warm layers of clothing, bring your camera (with manual options) and a tripod and you are ready for chasing the northern lights

Seakayaking full day - Lofoten Aktiv

To paddle sea kayak is the fantastic way to experience the alpine archipelago Lofoten and its unique flora and fauna on.

Lofoten Aktiv offers guided sea kayak tours in quiet and peaceful venues in our beautiful seascape.

This is the most popular activity, especially the Trollfjord trip. On all Lofoten Aktiv kayak tours we have a guide/instructor per 6-7 participants (with certain exceptions about the group composition/knowledge allows for it). Because of the landscape we live in and a nature that cannot withstand unsustainable use, we have not larger seakayak groups than 10 participants.

Our guides focus on the cultural and natural history of the area we live in, and conservation is embedded in everything we do. If required, provide guides your basic tips on paddling technique.

Join Lofoten Activities on tour and discover our wild and beautiful Lofoten from a sea kayak.

Included in the trip is the guide, seakayak (double) with paddles, spraydecks, vests, jackets and poogies (paddle mittens).

You should bring clothes that work in the weather of the day and snack, food an beverage for the day.

A mandatory requirement to attend our activities is that you must have a valid travel insurance policy that covers all activities that Lofoten Aktiv AS offers. This insurance must subscribe before beginning a trip to Lofoten.

Stetind - South East Ridge with Northern Alpine guides

Stetind (1391m) is Norway’s “National Mountain” and for a good reason. It is by far the most unique and beautiful peaks in the the country. The shape, location, and rock quality makes Stetind an irresistible mountain to climb on. Beautiful sweeping granite ridges rising straight from the sea.

It was first climbed in 1910 by the same team that first ascended Svolværgeita. It’s easiest route «Normalruta» is rated 5.6 and is a popular, easy and fun trip for normally fit travelers. Stetind also offers long technical climbs such as the classic and amazing south pillar for the experienced climbers. The south Pillar of Stetind is rated 5.10. Find your route and book your adventure.

Stetind – «Normalruta» – South East Ridge

South East “Classic” Ridge of Stetind is an amazing alpine rock route with easy to moderate climbing on quality granite. Technically this route is quite simple so we can take larger groups (with multiple guides) up and still move in good style and safety. The climbing on the South East Ridge is phenomenal and the views of the surrounding coastal alpine peaks are something hard to describe with words. The route has one technical and fun crux referred to by the first ascentionist as the “the ten finger hold traverse”. The whole experience of climbing Stetind is beautiful and if you have the opportunity this is a must do climb while visiting northern Norway.

We supply the Ropes, Rock Rack, and all technical equipment you need. We also include rock shoes, harness, and helmet in the price. You will carry your own small back pack on this route with clothes, water, food, snack and light shoes for the descent… We supply the rest.

Skill Level: Comfortable following Norwegian Grade 4 or a fit hiker used to steep terrain.

Krambua Restaurant

Mikael Björkman is a 38 old Swedish chef that like to play with the pure tastes from the fantastic local ingredients that is mainly found in the clear and pristine waters of Lofoten Islands. He will always try to make the guests feel welcome in a warm ambient!

Mikael started to work in the family bakery in Stockholm while he was combing studies in the restaurant school together with bakery. He has been working around in Stockholm in quite famous restaurants before Mikael and his wife Noemi decided to move to Lofoten Island and open Krambua Restaurant.

Noemi’s Italian background is also shown in the cooking from time to time.

The Menu at Krambua is changing very often based of the season and after what the fishermen (or) Mikael and Noemi can catch! One of the most important things is that Mikael always wants to guarantee the freshness of the food so there is a new menu more or less every day.

Noemi Ortenzi is 45 years old born and grew up in Italy. She attended a course in marketing and management at the University of Perugia and then she graduated in Political sciences at the department of social sciences of the intercultural communication.

When she was 37 Noemi moved to Sweden and she has been working there like an authorized tourist guide and teacher in Italian language in some private schools in Stockholm.

After 7 years, tired of the city life but in love with the mountains and the outdoor life, she moved again but this time to Norway.

She missed a lot working together with her husband so she took the chance to run the Krambua Restaurant in Lofoten with him.

Noemi had always the passion for food and the curiosity of tasting something new. Good food always unites all! For this reason she is so proud to satisfy the guests that come from all over the world.

Sea & Mountainsports - explore Helgeland and Lofoten high and low

July 12 - July 19, 2020 - 8 days - NOK 15.400 Welcome to our action packed sailing adventure from the magical Træna Island to the Alpine Lofoten archipelago. This trip is designed for those who want to experience both Helgeland’s thousands of islands, islets and reefs and Lofoten’s soaring peaks and crystal clear water.

The adventure starts on the magical island of Træna, where you also in advance of the trip may participate in the annual music festival. From there on we sail north crossing the Arctic Circle, towards the highest peaks and glaciers of the area.

You'll have the option to hike the Black Glacier, or hike to the top of highest mountain of the region. We then head back out to the archipelago of islands and find a new bay for the night. But the relaxation doesn’t last long. Next up is a crossing of the mythical West Fjord. A stretch of water famed for the heroic fishermen who would risk their lives to catch cod in all weather in the middle of the Arctic winter. At the far side of the West Fjord we'll bunk at Reine, which sits in the shelter of the majestic Lofoten Skyline.

In Lofoten we'll hike and climb the mountains, sail inbetween, and experience the local culture and cuisine. You may also surf the crystal clear and chill arctic water on the north side of Lofoten. The adventure ends with a regatta to and a concluding party at Henningsvær; the epicenter of ocean fishing, whale watching and extreme sports in the Lofoten. As with all our trips, you can learn to sail, experience and overcome challenges and make great friends for life.

Itinerary

Day 1 - We meet on Træna
Day 2 - Sail to Engabreen and Svartisen
Day 3 - Hike to Tåkeheimen/Helgelandsbukken (or a glacier hike on Svartisen)
Day 4 - All day sail heading north along the coast, across Vestfjorden to Lofoten
Day 5 - Reine and beach fun at Bunes beach
Day 6 - Hike up the mountains around Nusfjord or surfing at Unstad
Day 7 - Last sail to Henningsvær, fishing and farewell dinner in Henningsvær
Day 8 - Breakfast, packing, cleaning and farewell

Sailing level

This is a sailing trip possible to do for most travellers! Sailing-wise the trip is not particularly difficult, but you must be prepared for both wind and sailing in rough weather. Are you a beginner, we want to turn you into a sailor as quickly as possible and if you're experienced you'll get challenges and responsibilities on your level.

Travel

How to travel to Træna? We recommend our participants to travel as green as possible. To go by bike is such the most rewarding, however taking the train or going many in a car is also good. The train goes from Oslo to Mosjøen, from where you may take the bus to Sandnessjøen or Stokkvågen. And from there a boat. For train-timetables and prices see www.nsb.no. For buses see the public travelplanner www.177nordland.no.

You may of course also fly, most people do that. You then fly to either Sandnessjøen or Bodø, for flights see www.wideroe.no or www.norwegian.no .

If you have time you should also consider starting the trip with a leg on the coastal express Hurtigruten which departs daily early morning from Bodø and arrive Sandnessjøen in the day.

How do I get back from Henningsvær and Lofoten? Home from Lofoten most logistics go via Svolvær. Buses goes between Henningsvær and Svolvær. From Svolvær you may fly, or take the boat over to Bodø and travel further from there. Hurtigruten also has daily departes both southbound and northbound from Svolvær. We recommend anyway to dwell some extra days in Henningsvær and Lofoten after the trip, the area has a lot to offer.

Changes in the program

This program is a rough outline program as an ambition for the week. As we sail along we will adapt to weather conditions and there might be changes in the program. The aim however remains the same; to have the most amazing week possible. And with us under way we always have dinghies for beaching and small expeditions, we have fishing gear for the cod, and ashore there is often wood for the bondfire - we are ready to flex the program and adventure together!

Ski and Sail-adventure Easter 2020 - Seil Norge

April 7 - April 13, 2020 - 7 days - NOK 21.300 Welcome to join us on our Ski and Sail-adventure! Our Easter-expedition is a trip for those who like the idea of alpine skiing and randonné in the untouched Lofoten-mountains of northern Norway. It's a trip for travelers wanting a more challenging holiday - for those of you who would like to experience something unique, wild, breathtaking and beautiful - no matter if you're experienced or a beginner, we welcome you to our Ski & Sail adventure.

The Lofoten isles make out some of the rawest nature Norway has to offer. They are is famous for their alpine mountains and peaks and a great numbers of natural pistes, offering possibilities and options for a wide range of skiers. Most of the trips offer 700 - 1000 meters of altitude and descents, and the skiing most often ends down on the beach.

Many of the most spectacular places are available only by boat, therefore we sail. During these 7 days we will explore and reach many of the most beautiful mountains in Lofoten, and in between we will get much nice sailing on our way from the one place to the other.

This trip starts and ends in Svolvær. The skiing well plan together with the skiguide, and adjust it towards the group as well as weather and conditions. After skiing in the morning, we'll sail in the afternoon to the mountain for the next day. This is an active trip where the outdoor experiences are in focus; either behind the wheel of the boat or with skiis on our legs.

On this trip we have with us a skiguide onboard for all the days skiing. The guide is with us also as teacher and coach, and makes it possible for us to also do more challenging skiing and summits. Of the different places we will pass or visit we can mention Svolvær, Austnesfjorden, Geitgaljertind, the Trollfjord and Raftsundet. This Easter-trip starts with an optional two-day avalanche course, as an opportunity to gain local knowledge.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Meeting on the dock in Svolvær
Day 2 - Sailing and skiing
Day 3 - Skiing
Day 4 - Skiing
Day 5 - Skiing
Day 6 - Skiing
Day 7 - Early morning skiing and sailing back

What is really Ski and Sail?

It's a concept where we use our sailboats as a mobile base; we sail to the foot of the mountains and start our skiing right there on the beach. By boat we are flexible and can move from place to place, and choose hillsides, faces and our areas according to the conditions we may have. Ski and Sail is a concept done by italian and french alpinists since early 1990's, and a concept that norwegians recently have started to appreciate. We in SailNorway have arranged Ski & Sail in Helgeland, Steigen, Lofoten, Lyngen and Finnmark for many years, and we dare to say we know many of the best places to ski along the coast.

Experience level on this trip - medium

This trip takes some experience from randonee / skiing but you do not need to be advanced. If you do have a lot of experience it is only positive, and you will be able to challenge yourself. Those with more experience often want to run steeper, and maybe even do multiple runs in one day.

As organizers we try to keep the level as equal as possible, so that we can choose mountains according to the experience level held by the group. If you are in doubt whether it's the right trip for you, you're welcome to contact us at any time - even you are beginner or experienced.

This is a sailing trip suited for most travellers! Sailing-wise the trip is not particularly difficult, but you must be prepared for both wind and sailing in rough weather. If you're a beginner, we want to turn you into a sailor as quickly as possible and if you're experienced you'll get challenges and responsibility that suit your experience level.

Travel

We recommend all our customers to travel as environmentally friendly as possible. Travelling by train, or driving together is the best option. Traveling slowly also adds a whole other dimension to your vacation, rather than just flying above all the beautiful places our country has to offer.

Changes in the program

You may see the program as a plan that we adjust according to weather and conditions. If we're in a place without snow, we sail to where there is more snow! With the sailboat we're flexible, so we can find the best snow. Onboard we have with us a dinghy for trips ashore, fishing gear for the cod, and what we may need to make a bonfire and have fun ashore. We are ready for an adventure. Are you?

Wintersailing and photograpy

January 6 - January 12, 2020 - 7 days - NOK 16.400 Our winter trips with focus on photography have become very popular, so we are now preparing our wool and getting ready for new photo trips in January! The very special about these trips is the seasonal light which gives us the craziest #nofilter experiences hour after hour. We sail a full week from Bodø, via Lofoten and Senja, to the “Paris of the north” Tromsø.

This is a trip for those of you who want to take the “baddest” pictures during the harshest season in northern Norway, and for those who want to sail through northern Norway in a very special winter light with your camera always ready. While the batteries are charging under deck, you can be sailing, or learning how to sail, along the way. Winter sailing in northern Norway is completely unique and by combining it with photography we take maximum use of the day and are always ready to take the best pictures completely free of street lights or other disturbing lights.

This week we sail from Bodø and spend one week along the coast north to Tromsø. On the way we will sail by Steigen, Lofoten, Andøya and Senja, where we hope to find whales, race the northern lights, and learn more about sailing and photography.

One of our experienced skippers will take care of the sailing instruction and navigation, while one of our skillful photographers will facilitate for a photo expedition with lots of content, both professionally and socially.

On this trip we try to spend a day playing with the herring, orcas and other whales that are gathering along the coast of Troms every winter. For many years they have been playing around in the fjords outside of Kvaløya, while last year and this year they have been mostly around Skjærvøy. The weather forecast for the week, as well as the location of herring, will determine if we have time to go look for whales in northern Troms, or if we instead have to look for them outside Senja.

On this trip there are no photo prerequisites. Whether you are a professional or amateur means nothing. Just by sailing with other photo enthusiasts you will probably learn a lot. If you only have a mobile camera and want to join an unforgettable trip and sail during winter time, you are very welcome on board as well!

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival and sail to Karlsøy
Day 2 - Sail towards Steigen and over the Vestfjord to Lofoten
Day 3 - Full day of sailing up to Andøya and Risøyhamn
Day 4 - Going to Hamn on Senja - meeting the whales
Day 5 - Close on the whales in the fjords of Senja
Day 6 - Whale-safari on the outer side of Kvaløya
Day 7 - Last encounters with the whales and afternoon sail into Tromsø

Trip level

This is a trip for all those who are interested in photography, or nature. Or both! Sailing-wise the trip is not very difficult, but you have to be prepared for both beautiful, and harsh conditions. If you're a rookie, we wish to make you a sailor as soon as possible, and if you're experienced, you'll be given responsibility and experience greater challenges. This is a photo-trip, and we'll be spending a lot of time behind the camera. You don't have to have special knowledge with photography, we'll adjust the level accordingly to the participants, and you'll quickly be given new tasks and learn plenty underway.

Travel
We recommend all our customers to travel as environmentally friendly as possible. Travelling by train, or driving together is the best option. Traveling slowly also adds a whole other dimension to your vacation, rather than just flying above all the beautiful places our country has to offer.

Changes in the program
The program should be seen as a plan, and will be adjusted to according weather and conditions.

Arctic Beach Bonfire & Hike

“Arctic” and “Beach Bonfire” are not terms you often see together. But Lofoten's unique climate means that even in the depths of winter, you can enjoy the seaside. And not just any seaside!

In awe-inspiring surroundings, between spectacular mountains and the Norwegian Sea, lie the beaches of Haukland and Uttakleiv. Norwegians themselves voted Haukland the most beautiful place in the country, and British newspaper The Times chose Uttakleiv as the Most Romantic Beach in Europe!

A 5 kilometre (3 mile) hike along the old road around the headland connects the two, with views encompassing the beaches, the open sea, the village of Uttakleiv, and the mountains beyond. Indulge in a hot drink and a snack by the roaring flames of the fire. And since it’s dark enough to view the northern lights from September to April, you will have the chance to see them playing over the ocean, and glittering on the snow-capped peaks to the sound of the waves rolling gently onto the shore.

*Minimum amount of Participants: 4

The tour starts every day from the bus station behind the gas station 'Circle K' in Leknes

Galleri Lofoten

Gallery Lofoten has Norway’s largest collection of paintings from Northern Norway dating back to the turn of the last century – a period by many called the golden age of North Norwegian painting.

On the gallery’s ground floor you find a collection of paintings by renowned artists like Otto Sinding, Gunnar Berg, Even Ulving, Adelsteen Normann, Einar Berger, Ole Juul, Thorolf Holmboe and others.

The gallery’s first floor is divided into two sections – one exhibiting watercolours by Lars Lerin and one exhibiting pictures and ceramic works by Her Majesty Queen Sonja.

Lars Lerin is born in Munkfors in Värmland, Sweden and is currently living at Hammarø outside Karlstad. Lars Lerin has lived in Lofoten for several years and is considered one of the world’s most outstanding watercolourists. He is known for his quite unique technique and he has developed his very own method in his use of colours. Grey, blue, and ochre dominate in varying nuances and nature is central to his art. Himself, he says that ‘in reality, light is my subject’.

HM Queen Sonja’s lifelong interest in art has resulted in art history studies, an extensive art collection, and her own artistic production. The Queen has studied various techniques and been in apprenticeship with a number of artists. Tre Reiser Tre Landskap (‘Three Journeys Three Landscapes’) with Kjell Nupen and Ørnulf Opdahl in 2012 and Texture with Magne Furuholmen in 2016 are two of her most central art projects.
The exhibition shows a number of works by HM Queen Sonja where she applies different techniques like lithography, monotype, etching, woodcut, and aquatint. A varied selection of the Queens ceramic works are also on display.

In the gallery shop you find a selection of art books, postcards, and posters by the exhibition’s artists.

In our café you may enjoy a glass of wine and a cheese platter from the local cheese producer Aalan Farm. We also serve freshly made coffee and ecological baked goods from the Unseld bakery.

Norwegian Telecom Museum in Sørvågen

LOCAL AND NATIONAL TELECOM HISTORY Why did the first morse code signal in Northern Europe emanate from the telegraph station in Sorvagen, far west of Lofoten, in 1906? The telegraph was developed as early as 1861, with Sorvagen as the terminus. Why? And where were these signals sent? To which ship was the same wireless message sent in 1908?

The Norwegian Telecom Museum at Sorvagen provides answers to these and many other questions. The museum houses beautiful exhibits that appeal to many age groups and interests, and a rich collection of newer and older pieces related to the topic. The information is visual and funny. Check out the exhibition of mobile phones and compare your own with the 1973 edition – there’s quite a difference!
There are not only phones and old switchboards, but also a good explanation as to why Lofoten and Sorvagen were among the first to adopt modern technology.
The Norwegian Telecom Museum at Sorvagen located in Telebygget 1914, a large, white wooden house just off E10. The museum is a department of the Norwegian Telecom Museum in Oslo and is administered by the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum in Å.

Scenic Hike & Fishing Village Tour to Henningsvær

The scenery around the Lofoten Islands are mesmerising, and with some moderate effort we are able to hike to some of the most epic peaks in the area.

On the Southern side of the Lofoten Islands we will find Henningsvær, a cozy, traditional fishing village that offers absolutely stunning views and attracts thousands of visitors each year. The view over Henningsvær, is best seen from “Festvågtind” which is one of Lofoten’s most scenic peaks. Whilst easier to hike than the “infamous” Reinebringen, this peak is popular amongst outdoor enthusiasts and photography communities. This peak is accessible by a moderate nature/mountain hike, and the rewarding views are truly amazing! This fantastic experience combines two of our most popular activities, hiking with a view, and exploring the cozy traditional fishing villages of Lofoten. This tour starts in the town of “Svolvær” where our crew will meet you after you enjoy breakfast in Svolvær. Our professional drivers & experienced guides make this journey a fun and educational experience, learning about the traditional ways of the North.

Lofoten Top 5 Sightseeing and Photography Tour

During this tour through the Lofoten Islands, we picked our top 5 locations for photography and exploring. An amazing day seeing the best of Lofoten with our experienced guides.

Lofoten is one of Norway’s most famous summer destinations, and it lives up to its reputation with it’s stunning fjords, epic mountains and picturesque fishing villages. Photographers and explorers from all over the world comes to Lofoten in search of the perfect locations for arctic photography, and Lofoten has a lot of it!

The guided photo tour around the Lofoten Islands starts in the fishing village and municipality “Svolvær” where we our crew meets you in the morning. Our professional drivers & experienced guides make this scenic journey a fun and educational drive where you get to see plenty of the beauty Lofoten is so famous for.

As we head out on the narrow curvy roads of Lofoten, there is so much so see and it’s easy to get carried away by stopping around each corner to take pictures. Our guides are knowledgeable in the area, and we have chosen a preferred route with 5 stops to give you the best of Lofoten within one full day of exploring. We provide a safe and comfortable transfer around the islands with guiding about the locations that we visit alongside time for photos and questions throughout the day.

Traditional fishing villages, steep mountains, white sand beaches, dried fish, stunning roads and bridges, this tour really provides everything in one amazing day.

Due to busy roads and rapidly changing weather conditions, we want to acknowledge that the route may change on the day, regardless below you can find a list of our 5 favourite locations that we want to explore with you!

1. Kabelvåg

Kabelvåg is an important historical fishing village located just 5 Kilometers (3.1 Miles) and about a 10 minute drive from Svolvær. This village is a popular day visit and offers a picturesque atmosphere with its blend of historic importance and modern updates of a typical Norwegian coastal town, known for its cod fishing. In the middle ages Kabelvåg became the most important cod fishing harbours on the Norwegian coast, and contributed to the dry cod from “Nordland” accounting for almost 80% of Norway's export in the 13th century.

Kabelvåg has traces of settlements from the late stone age, and now offers attractions such as the Lofoten Museum, Lofoten Aquarium and Vågan Church (known as the Lofoten Cathedral).

2. Haukland Beach

Haukland Beach is one of Lofoten’s most famous beach and hike, located on the westside on Lofoten. The caribbean like-waters, mountain landscape in the background, and white sand beach make Haukland Beach, a popular destination for travelers and photo-seekers year round.

Haukland beach is Lofoten’s “swimming beach”, although the water temperatures don’t reach above 15 degrees, you’ll see locals and tourists enjoying the water in the summer sun (water temperatures range from 3-15 degrees). Haukland beach is a unique destination in Lofoten as it offers the possibility to easy access from the road that takes you all the way to the beach.

3. Hamnøy Bridge

Hamnøy Bridge is yet another very photogenic location in the outer parts of Lofoten. The bridge connects the island Hamnøya with the island of Toppøya, and is one of the most popular viewpoints for photography in all of Lofoten.

Logistics on the small island can be challenging, due to the volume of visitors passing by, but the rewarding views are worth the effort of a short leg stretcher around the island, the view’s won't disappoint you! Traditionally Hamnøy was connected to Reine by ferry, but replaced by this beautiful bridge as part of European route E10.

4. Sakrisøya

Sakrisøya is a very small island just North of Reine and West of Hamnøy bridge. It’s probably one of the most photogenic islands in scandinavia, and every day a large amount of visitors drive through the small village. A unique blend between a traditional fishing village, with the sound and smell of the ocean with stunning views of the dramatic mountain landscape in the background is a dream for every photographer and explorer. On the island we’ll find a fishing industry, small cabins for rent and a dolls & toy museum.

5. Reine

This small fishing village on the outer part of Lofoten offers an absolutely stunning view and attracts thousands of visitors each year. With a permanent population of only just above 300 people, the picturesque feeling of a small town vibe shaped by the atlantic waves is an experience you will remember for a lifetime. Reine is located just southwest of Sakrisøya, and as we drive through the landscape the narrow roads and bridges between the villages is breathtaking to say the least.

Apartments - Livland Gård

The apartments are located down by the harbor where you can stay in high comfort, and watch the boats that come and go. The fantastic ocean views and the surrounding mountains make this a unique accommodation.

Fishing has been the most important industry in Lofoten since the dawn of time. At times, the cod / dryfish was the one thing that provided Norway with export revenue. Kayak Nature Safari

You cannot get closer to nature than this! Our 3 hour nature safari takes you out on a kayak trip out of the ordinary. Together with our experienced guide you will be introduced to Lofotens bird and marine life.

The combination of silence, raw nature on all sides, and full freedom of motion, makes sea kayaking one of our most popular adventures.

Lofoten’s nature has unique and spectacular contrasts and kayaking is a great way to experience these. When you embark in a sea kayak you practically sit on the surface of the sea and can navigate it using your own bodily strength.

You can appreciate Lofoten’s dramatic mountains from a wholly new perspective when you paddle up close to them. It is an experience almost as majestic as standing on top of them.

You receive a solid introduction before we embark on the double kayaks from Nyvågar in Kabelvåg where our knowledgeable guides meet you 30 minutes before departure.

The weather in Lofoten changes a lot from day to day, which is some of the charm of the islands. You should dress to suit the weather, and our recommendation is that on a cold summer day you wear wool underwear. Bring a water bottle too.
Other timings and group arrangements on request.

Låven at Hov

In May 2018 we finished restoring the barn above the stables and made it a cozy restaurant and coffee shop. Here we serve tasty local and short-lived food, delicious coffee & homebaked cakes. The barn is opened every day and seats up to 100 guests.

The venue has all rights and is opened to all kinds of arrangements. Combine the dining experience on the barn with a horseback ride, a hike on the Hoven or just a stroll on the beautiful Hov beach. One of Europe’s best golf courses Lofoten Links and Lofoten Links Lodges, with perhaps Lofoten’s highest standard of accommodation, is located within a walking distance.

The restoration of the barn from the 1950s started already in 2016 and has been going on for over a year. The work was carried out by local contractors and by the farm’s own employees. To the north we have installed large windows that give beautiful view to the ocean, midnight sun and the northern lights. The tables are handmade with 100-year-old timbers by our neighbor craftswoman and the lights in the ceiling are the original milk tanks from the farm. We have taken care of the original construction so that the room gives a very authentic and rustic feel. At the same time, it is insulated according to today’s requirements and is warm and inviting throughout the year. The large fireplace and the soft retro-style chairs create a nice atmosphere even on dark winter evenings. Here you can enjoy a great meal, contemplate the view with a group of friends or just relax by the fireplace with a good book and a local beer. We are prepared to host also the youngest customers with a kids corner full of games and toys and a simple menu for kids.

The venue is as well suitable for meetings, workshops and conferences and can be reserved for this throughout the year. In the ceiling we have installed a high-class projector as well as a large canvas for film screenings and presentations. This together with a professional soundsystem and acoustic panels make the barn the perfect place for whole-day meetings and smaller conferences, as well as courses in northern lights photography and lectures or discussions.

Set up your next arrangement, Christmas table or company meeting at Låven, combined with horseback or golf activities and accommodation at Lofoten Links.

Kaffepause - coffee break with the locals

Blend in with the locals over a cup of coffee.

Based on Norwegians' unique relationship with coffee - we actually drink second most in the whole world - you can book a meeting with a local in Lofoten on the website www.kaffepause.org. If you want to become better acquainted with local customs, traditions, stories, myths - and the daily life north of the Arctic Circle - this is for you.

Some visitors say it can be difficult to get to know us Norwegians - we have a reputation for being a little shy and introverted. We do not want to change this with Kaffepause: We are who we are and that is good enough. What we want to do is open the door ajar and give Norwegians and visitors an opportunity to meet each other and share the joy of a cup of coffee. Everyone who have tried the service describes it as a wonderful experience. Take a chance and sign up as a coffee guest! You won't regret it.

Viking Experience

Meet the Vikings. Smell the tar, taste the food, feel the history. The Vikings have been awaiting you for more than 1000 years. Experience the Viking age, going direct from the pier.

A short drive through rich, rolling farmland brings you to the Lofotr Viking Museum. Built around the discovery of the largest Viking longhouse ever found, the centerpiece is a reconstruction of that longhouse. Oil lamps flicker, smoke curls up from the fireplace, statues of the old gods stand among intricate wood carvings and walls hung with furs. Craftspeople weave, work leather and carve.

It's only the flash of cameras that remind you you're still in the present. And because the objects in the longhouse are replicas, you can get a little bit closer to the past by donning a helmet, picking up a sword, and playing Viking to your heart’s content!

The museum's other building houses the archaeological finds from the site, as well as an exhibition on the site's discovery, the souvenir shop, and a café.

Summer Night Hike to Kvalvika Beach

On this tour we want to take you to one of the most stunning places around Lofoten, where the evening sun turns the landscape to an absolute treat. Join us on a scenic evening drive through the Lofoten islands, combined with an easy hike to Kvalvika Beach.

The arctic summer nights are very special, above the arctic circle we have the midnight sun keeping the sky bright throughout the summer season to add that extra element of magic.

“Kvalvika Beach” is located on the Northwestern part of the Lofoten islands, and the location is best to visit during the evening with the sun hits the hillside and white sand beaches.

The scenic drive & summer night hike to Kvalvika Beach starts in the fishing village and municipality “Svolvær” where we our crew meets you for the drive through Lofoten islands towards the outer parts of the Lofoten islands. Our professional drivers & experienced guides make this scenic journey a fun and educational drive where you get to see plenty of the beauty Lofoten is so famous for.

Our destination, Kvalvika Beach, is a famous beach located on the north western side of lofoten, facing the mighty atlantic ocean and only accessible by foot. The drive to get there is a treat by itself, and the hike to the beach is relatively easy, making it a suitable tour for any travellers with a modest physical level. Arriving at the end of the trailhead, after approximately 30 minutes walk, is a rewarding experience and it takes some moments to absorb the beauty of the steep mountains protecting the sandy bay from the surrounding world.

At the beach there is plenty of time for strolling along the sandy coast line, take pictures or simple breath in and absorb the stunning surroundings. We gather for a light picknick, warm drinks share some history about the destination, before heading back through the mountain valley, towards the parked minibus.

We highly recommend to explore during the Arctic evenings, the light is a unique experience and generally the location can be too crowded during daytime. With the best light appearing in the bay during the evenings we’re excited to explore Kvalvika beach together with you!

Half day Kayak - Northern Explorer

Join us on an exploration of the scenic fjords and islands. Kayaking definitely offers you the ability to be closer to nature than a lot of other activities do.

The half day Kayak Adventure is about 3,5 hours long and departs daily at 10:00 or at 14:00. Group size can vary from 2-10 people.
We meet at Eggum, on the beach where you will get to know your highly experienced guide and the rest of your group. We will go over kayak safety, route and conditions and you will get to know your kayak.
We will be paddling North-East and all around the beautiful small islands. We provide delicious snacks and hot drinks for you to maintain energy while we paddle. While you are resting, watching the birds or sea life and taking in the views from your kayak your guide will tell you stories about the life and nature of Lofoten.
For this trip, it’s not necessary to have any previous experience. 99% of our guests never kayaked before.
This is a short but fun filled experience for everybody!

Departures: Every day 10:00 am. and 14:00
